Director of Marketing & Communications

Birthplace of Country Music | Bristol, TN/VA
Full-Time | Exempt | Starting Salary: $60,000 annually

About the Role

The Birthplace of Country Music (BCM) is seeking an experienced, creative, and collaborative Director of Marketing & Communications to lead marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, and brand strategy across the organization.

BCM is the parent organization of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival, and Radio Bristol. Together, these programs celebrate the history, impact, and continuing legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions while connecting audiences with the music and culture of our region today.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can think strategically, manage people and projects, and turn ideas into effective campaigns. The Director of Marketing & Communications works across BCM to grow audiences, strengthen the organization's brands, support revenue-generating activities, and tell BCM's story locally, regionally, nationally, and beyond.

What You'll Do

The Director of Marketing & Communications will:

  • Lead, supervise, and support BCM's marketing and communications team, fostering a collaborative, creative, and accountable work environment.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing plans and strategies across the Museum, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, Radio Bristol, and organization-wide initiatives.
  • Plan and oversee integrated campaigns across digital advertising, email, social media, websites, print, public relations, and other channels.
  • Manage the marketing budget and allocate resources across campaigns, advertising, vendors, and other initiatives with attention to effectiveness and return on investment.
  • Ensure consistent and compelling brand positioning and messaging across BCM's programs and platforms.
  • Direct public relations efforts, including cultivating media relationships and developing and distributing press releases and other media materials.
  • Oversee advertising strategy, placement, negotiation, creative development, and results assessment.
  • Manage outside agencies, contractors, photographers, videographers, designers, and other marketing partners as needed.
  • Collaborate with BCM departments to understand priorities, coordinate campaigns, and ensure marketing efforts support broader organizational goals.
  • Oversee BCM's websites and digital presence to ensure content remains current, engaging, professional, and effective.
  • Guide BCM's social media strategy and ensure channels are active, accurate, engaging, and aligned with organizational goals.
  • Coordinate email marketing and direct-mail campaigns, including audience development, content, production, and performance analysis.
  • Support the development of sponsorship materials, membership campaigns, media kits, contributor recognition materials, presentations, and other organizational communications.
  • Monitor marketing performance and use analytics, market research, audience insights, and emerging trends to continually improve strategy.
  • Maintain clear priorities, schedules, and workflows across multiple simultaneous projects and organizational needs.
  • Perform other duties that support BCM's mission and organizational priorities.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who combines strategic thinking with the willingness and ability to be hands-on. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and project manager who can move comfortably between long-term planning, team leadership, creative development, and the day-to-day demands of a dynamic nonprofit organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least five years of relevant professional marketing and communications experience; or at least seven years of relevant professional marketing and communications experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and evaluating integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Experience in several areas of marketing and communications, such as advertising, public relations, digital marketing, branding, social media, website management, email marketing, and content development.
  • Experience creating content for multiple channels, including web, email, social media, video, and print.
  • Experience working with designers, agencies, contractors, and/or internal marketing staff.
  • Experience managing multiple social media channels and accounts.
  • Working knowledge of digital advertising, social media, and analytics platforms such as Google Ads, Google Analytics, Meta Business tools, and comparable platforms.
  • Experience with WordPress or another content management system.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • A proactive, creative, and solutions-oriented approach to work.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising and developing marketing or communications staff.
  • Marketing experience in arts and culture, tourism, music, museums, festivals, attractions, hospitality, or another audience-focused organization.
  • Tourism marketing experience.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms such as Hive or comparable systems.
  • Experience with Sprout Social or similar social media management platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Premiere Pro.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week and reporting to BCM's Executive/Deputy Director. Starting salary: $60,000 annually.

Because BCM produces live events and public programming, the position requires some evening and weekend work, particularly surrounding major events and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.
